History of the Old Fashioned

Dating back to the early 1800s, the Old Fashioned was one of the simpler and earlier forms of a cocktail. Popularised in America, the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky is often cited as the original club where it was created.

What does the Old Fashioned taste like?

As the main component of the Old Fashioned is bourbon or rye whisky, its main tasting notes come from the characteristics of the bourbon or rye being used in the cocktail. Even with variances in its taste, the Old Fashioned typically has notes of vanilla and caramel, and a good balance of spicy and sweet flavours from the combination of sugar and Angostura Bitters used to complement each other. The Old Fashioned does have a stronger alcoholic content as compared to other cocktails, with about 40% ABV (Alcohol By Volume).

Classic Old Fashioned Recipe

45ml Bourbon or Rye Whisky

1 Sugar Cube

Few dashes of Angostura Bitters

Few dashes of Plain Water

Orange Zest or an Orange Slice (Garnish)

Cocktail Cherry (Garnish)

How-To

Place the sugar cube in an old fashioned or rocks glass.

Saturate sugar cube with Angostura Bitters, together with a few dashes of plain water.

Muddle the concoction together until dissolved.

Fill the glass with ice and pour in the chosen bourbon or rye whisky.

Stir and garnish with the orange zest or slice and top with the cocktail cherry.

Variations

Although the Old Fashioned has only a few ingredients, this does not mean that there aren’t other variations in spirits that can be used.

Some variations of the Old Fashioned include -

Brandy Old Fashioned: uses brandy in place of whisky

Fizzy Old Fashioned: uses blood orange soda in the cocktail
