FAQs

  1. What are the different types of rum?

The different types of rum are: light rum, dark rum, spiced rum and aged rum. Some types of rum are produced in pot stills whereas others in column stills.

  1. How do you drink rum?

Most people drink rum like they do whisky in a glass with ice and a slice of lime. Others drink it neat in a small glass at room temperature.

  1. What is the typical alcohol percentage of rum?

The alcohol percentage range you will encounter typically plays around 37.5%-40% in most rums. However, some rums have an alcohol percentage of upwards of 80%. Rum is generally a drink with a mild to average buzz, but if you’re feeling brave, you can give these stronger rums a try.

  1. Should rum be chilled?

Like whiskey, rum doesn’t need to be chilled or refrigerated because of the high alcohol content. Therefore rum’s flavours are preserved without being refrigerated.

  1. Does rum go bad?

Pure rum doesn’t go bad quickly. Unopened rum can last for years, and opened bottles can also last long without going bad. The distillation and ageing process ensures that the shelf life is relatively long.

  1. Does rum continue ageing even when in the bottle?

Rum stops ageing when it’s already outside of the barrel, so a rum that is aged 10 years will remain 10 years old even after a couple of years has passed. Ageing is usually done in charred barrels that impart the flavour to the rum, so it wouldn’t be possible to further age the rum by keeping it inside the bottle.

  1. Why was the Bacardi 151 rum discontinued?

Because Bacardi was rebranding themselves. The Bacardi 151 rum was highly flammable and had a reputation of being harmful to consumers since it was commonly used for “flaming shots” which led to many home accidents.

  1. What is spiced rum?

Spiced rums are infused with various spices like rosemary, cinnamon, and pepper to give them a distinct and varied flavour profile. Gold rum is typically used as a base for this type of rum, as the base flavour of gold rums complements the spices.
