All About Cocktails: The Margarita

Not to be confused with a pizza margherita, the word “margarita” is the Spanish word for daisy, and is in reference to the modern margarita’s predecessors.

History of the Margarita

With its major popularity in modern cocktail bars, the margarita has had many different origin stories. It took inspiration from a category of cocktails called “Daisies” in the early 20th century -  made with citrus juice that was sweetened with syrup or liqueur and then fortified by a base spirit. The first known record of the word “Margarita”, however, was in 1953.

What does a Margarita taste like?

A Margarita is said to have all five main tasting notes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami, making it a perfectly balanced drink. It has a strong citrus flavour from the presence of lime juice and triple sec - an orange-flavoured liqueur. This is coupled from a strong kick of the tequila, where the strong taste is unavoidable. The margarita may not be suited as a beginner’s drink, but it is recommended as a grown-up version of a lemonade.

What is a Margarita?

Classic Margarita Recipe

Ingredients

50ml 100% Agave Tequila

20ml Triple Sec

15ml Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice

Salt (Rim Garnish)

Wedge of Lime (Rim Garnish)

How-to

  2. Spin the glass rim into salt to coat
  3. Add all liquids into a shaker with ice
  4. Shake and strain into the margarita glass

Variations

The margarita has many variations, and is favoured for its malleability.

Flavoured tequila - instead of a regular 100% agave tequila, you can opt to swap for flavoured tequila options or other mezcals

Flavoured liqueurs - instead of an orange-flavoured triple sec, opt to swap for other liqueurs

Fresh Lime Juice - fresh lime juice can be swapped for other citrus juices such as lemon, orange, cranberries, etc.

Frozen Margaritas - instead of the liquid cocktail, blend with ice to create a frozen slushie treat
