Gin & Tonic

With International Gin and Tonic Day coming up on 19 October, it is only right that we dive deep into the cocktail that is the Gin and Tonic.

The History of the Gin & Tonic

Malaria was a persistent issue in the 19th Century, and was often treated by a traditional cure- quinine in tonic water. With the taste being too bitter, officers of the Presidency armies innovated the addition of water, sugar, lime and gin in order to make the concoction more palatable. The Gin and Tonic was thus born.

What does a Gin & Tonic taste like?

Though the main taste of a gin and tonic depends heavily on the tasting notes of gin used, it is described as having a bright and zesty taste. An authentic gin and tonic recipe is made with 1 part gin to 3 parts tonic water thus creating a 1:3 ratio, however, up to 3 parts of gin can be used if desired, creating a 1:1 ratio for those who prefer a stronger taste.
