Makers Mark is smooth and approachable with an easy finish – a true contrast to hot, harsh whiskies that “blow your ears off,” and a downright revolutionary idea at the time.
Meet the Makers Mark Family
In 1953, Maker's Mark® revolutionised the bourbon industry with their family's quest to create a bourbon they enjoyed drinking and sharing with friends.
Born to Bourbon, Bill Samuels, Sr.
With his only copy of the family's trusted, 170-year-old recipe, Bill went on to experiment different flavourings of grains. His experiments coupled with a mishap of burning down a set of drapes led him to invent a mash bill of his own - Swapping out the traditional rye grain that is commonly used in bourbons for soft, red winter wheat to replace the hot bite of rye with the delicate sweetness that Maker's® is known for today.
Making Makers Mark - One Bottle a Time, Everytime
At Maker’s Mark, it is believed that machines don’t make characters. All bourbon is made carefully one bottle at a time.
Bil’s Smash
Soft red winter wheat invented by Bill Samuels, Sr is the Maker's Mark flavoring grain and star of its mash bill. It is a palate pleaser imparting sweetness that Maker's Mark is known for.
Limestone Water
Maker's Mark is the only distillery with its own water source and watershed. The limestone shelf where the distillery is located filters out iron from water that is unpleasant to bourbon - a key to crafting the unique taste of Maker's Mark bourbon.
Double-Barrel Distillation Stills
Double barrel distillation stills are used to remove impurities and create a finished product of a refined sipping whisky.
Barrel Rotation by Hand
Barrel rotation by hand is a practice that has been abandoned by many distillers but Maker’s Mark is still rolling their 525-pounds barrels by hand to ensure proper exposure to the different temperatures around the rackhouse.
