Caol Ila 12 is one of the lighter Islay whiskies, having a unique floral and peppery aroma that complements the typical Islay peaty flavor. Caol Ila (pronounced col eela) is a Gaelic word that translates to "sound of Islay." The name comes from its geographical location, which is less than a mile north of Port Askaig on the edge of the Sound of Islay.
The Caol Ila Distillery was founded by Hector Henderson in 1846, but it was unsuccessful and got taken over by Norman Buchanan, proprietor of the Isle of Jura Distillery, in 1854.
Caol Ila is widely used as an ingredient in the Johnnie Walker Black bottle, in addition to its reputation as an Islay single malt.
