At 19, Teacher’s was founded by William Teacher. A former cotton-mill worker in the early 19 century, he obtained liquor licensing from a grocer shop owned by the mother of his girlfriend. Two years later, he married his girlfriend Agnes MacDonald and opened his first dram shop which sold glasses of fine whisky that were supplied across Scotland.
As soon as William opened his second shop, he started to sell bottled whisky. With the rapid population growth at the turn of the century, William had established almost 20 dram shops where customers were able to enjoy their drams at shop and purchase a bottle of whisky. Finally, William was legally able to experiment and produce his own whisky for sale in his shop after the amendment of the Spirits Act in 1860. He distilled a whisky which contained huge amounts of peated malt, creating a rich and unique flavour, thus creating Teacher’s Highland Cream. After William Teacher’s passing, the brand grew under his son and became one of the largest whisky brands in the world.
