drinking at home

You’re on the way home after a long Friday in the office. The itch is slowly growing; you find yourself wanting for a cold, stiff one to cap off the day. Your phone beeps; your buddies are calling you out for some drinks at the local bar. You catch yourself letting out a short sigh -- wait, why are you sighing? You wanted a drink anyway, no? “Well yeah… but not like that…” Don’t worry, we understand (and hope your friends do, too). Drinking at home and drinking out are very different experiences. While both can be enjoyed alone or with company, it’s common that individuals head out with friends, and drink home alone.

In fact, when one mentions drinking at home, imagination would paint a person sitting alone on the carpet, bingeing a Korean drama while downing glasses of wine. This isn’t always the case, though, house parties are getting more popular than ever.

However, the modern-day, more so than ever, makes drinking at home appear to be a good idea; perhaps even a better option than drinking out. Why is this so -- what exactly are some reasons to drink at home in 2021?

Drink Home, Drink Safe

“Prepare and prevent, don’t repair and repent” is a suitable phrase to describe the most salient reason -- drinking at home is simply safer. Too often have the best of us found ourselves wandering the streets in the wee hours of the morning, trying to find our way back to our beds.

Impact of Peer Pressure on Alcoholic Consumption

Consuming alcohol at the local bar can often lead to us losing sight of self-established limits, particularly when subjected to peer pressure. While most people enjoy the boisterous crowds of people drinking around you, the joyful atmosphere serves as an additional motivator for heavy drinking.  It should be said that consuming alcoholic beverages in copious amounts isn’t always a bad thing, particularly when surrounded by good company who emphasise on personal safety.

However, when the effects of alcohol hit and everyone’s feeling nice and elevated, things can get out of control -- making the all-important journey home incredibly more difficult. Drinking at home with your buddies takes that arduous journey out of the equation.

Risk of Drinking Out Today

Outside of taking the late-night trip home inebriated, drinking out today, unfortunately, comes with more risks than before. The recent coronavirus pandemic has drastically changed the way we live our lives. In addition to newly enforced laws to socially distance in public, Singapore has taken a harsher stance to close non-essential businesses such as bars until further notice.

Stay Home, Stay Safe

Some may argue that bars are just as essential as hospitals and supermarkets. As much as we miss the #barlife and night scene, we urge you to stay home and stay safe in the meantime, folks. Thankfully, there are other ways to feed our dependence on alcohol (heh).

Cheaper at Home

Outside of safety, drinking at home holds one key benefit --  drinking at home is way more affordable than at the bar. These discounted prices extend to almost every single beverage; alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Beers? Cheaper at home. Red wine, white wine, sparkling wine and spirits? Cheaper at home. Cocktails? Cheaper at home. Fruit juice (for your non-drinking significant other)? Cheaper at home for sure.

Home Mixed VS Professionally Mixed, The Quality Struggle

Of course, there is much confusion about the quality of cocktails made at home versus those made by a professional mixologist. Indeed, standards between the two might be slightly different; both in terms of ingredient quality and mixing expertise. That being said, you could still make yourself a mean cocktail with the right guidance and a well-stocked home bar (check out our blog article on making cocktails at home for some tips on how to do so).

Inbound Perks, Craft Your Own High

Mixing your own cocktails at home also serves as a fun activity to do while drinking at home with friends or family; marvel at their mixology skills -- or mock their lack thereof, it’ll be a fun time regardless! Whether we like it or not, these times have provided us with more time at home. As the saying goes: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”! It’s up to us to make the best of our time at home, particularly since the choice to drink at home or drink out has essentially been made for us. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts!
