Angostura Bitters AKA Angostura® Aromatic Bitters have been made with the same original secret formula since 1824, and it remains the fundamental and definitive component for traditional and contemporary cocktails.

Angostura bitters are concentrated bitters made in Trinidad and Tobago using gentian, herbs, and spices. Most commonly used to flavour beverages or food in some instances. The bitters were initially made in Angostura (now Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela), hence the name.

The exact recipe, which has not been revealed, was initially developed as a tonic by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, a German surgeon general in Simón Bolívar's army in Venezuela.
